3 . Snake or Parametric Active Contour

چکیده

Many of the original or classical image segmentation techniques like thresholding or edge detection techniques are very susceptible to noise. Another issue that causes problems are gaps in the boundary. As seen in chapter two watershed methods also perform poorly under these conditions. The snake or parametric active contour was developed to handle these problems. They perform well in spite of noise and boundary gaps. This chapter has been done in cooperation with Aurelie Bugeau an exchange student from the 'Higher National Engineering School of Electronics, Computer Science and Telecommunications of Bordeaux' in France, who investigated and implemented certain enhancements on the snake method. First we treat the theory of snakes, then the implementation of the snake is given. Some improvements that have been developed are discussed in the following sections, as applying the snake on multiple scales and with the gradient vector flow force. The balloon snake and a semi-automatic initialization developed by Aurelie Bugeau are discussed next. Then the robustness of the snake method is tested by applying it to some artificial and real images. Finally a discussion on this method is given and some suggestions for future enhancements.

Review of Parametric Active Contour Models in Image Processing

The parametric active contour models are widely used in computer vision and image processing. This paper reviews the research status of parametric active contour models in the past decade. The parametric active contour models have gained wide attention for a long time. First, the traditional snake and some typical modified models are introduced. Second, the parametric active contour models appl...

Active Contours for Cell Tracking

This paper introduces an active contour or snakebased method for tracking cells within a video sequence. Specifically, we apply our cell tracking techniques to rolling leukocytes observed in vivo (in living animal) from video microscopy. The analysis of leukocyte motion reveals cues about the mechanism of inflammatory disease. To attack the problem of tracking leukocytes in vivo, the proposed s...

An improved snake model for automatic extraction of buildings from urban aerial images and LiDAR data

Automatic extraction of objects from images has been a topic of research for decades. The main aim of these researches is to implement a numerical algorithm in order to extract the planar objects such as buildings from high resolution images and altitudinal data. Active contours or snakes have been extensively utilized for handling image segmentation and classification problems. Parametric acti...

Kernel snakes: non-parametric active contour models

In this paper, a new non-parametric generalized formulation to statistical pressure snakes is presented. We discuss the shortcomings of the traditional pressure snakes. We then introduce a new generic pressure model that alleviates these shortcomings, based on the Bayesian decision theory. Non-parametric techniques are used to obtain the statistical models that drive the snake. We discuss the a...

Segmentation of the left ventricle in cardiac cine MRI using a shape-constrained snake model

Segmentation of the left ventricle (LV) is a hot topic in cardiac magnetic resonance (MR) images analysis. In this paper, we present an automatic LV myocardial boundary segmentation method using the parametric active contour model (or snake model). By convolving the gradient map of an image, a fast external force named gradient vector convolution (GVC) is presented for the snake model. A circle...
